As I was speaking with my good ole buddy Tone today, (after watching his latest installment of ‘FlowReal – Talking Stories‘, where he interviews the very attractive and talented Constanza from Chile) I found myself needing to invent a new word.
In making this episode, Tone had experienced a few major technical failures with his equipment when conducting the interview – forcing him to end the program abruptly. Though, he admits that it was largely his fault, it alerted me to the fact that I’m not familiar with a word that describes the feeling; the feeling that the gods and quite possibly all of existence has decided to make a joke of you today by means of a complete technical failure. This is NOT the kind of fail where it’s obvious to those present that it is beyond your control and not your fault…but the kind that leaves others looking at you wondering if perhaps you have no idea how to use the devices you were so proudly wielding just seconds ago.
IMPOTECH [impo-tek] (noun, adjective, verb):
1. The situation in which your technology fails you at a critical moment, resulting in complete mission failure.
2. Psychological and sociological damage caused by a scenario in which your technological equipment (hardware, software or otherwise) has failed you when you needed it most.
3. An inability to render services to end users and/or spectators where it pertains to technical difficulties.
4. A deliberate effort to render another party’s technical status functionally useless, either by general ignorance or willful sabotage. (to impotech, impoteching, etc.)
ex.1: “It was a complete impotech, everyone was staring at me.”
ex.2: “Dude, total impotech.”
ex.3: “I was impotech, nothing more to do.”
ex.4: “These people have been impoteching our situation from the start.”
Clearly, there is a male slant in the equation here but my next challenge will be to tackle a word for the female equivalent of ’emasculated’. In the meantime, enjoy using a brand new word.
