I was on my way to the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
I had been invited by my friend Erin who has a friend that apparently takes people out to sail every week for a cash donation. She couldn’t make it that day but told me to mention the guy’s name and it would be cool.

When I arrived I didn’t see any group of people where she had said they would be but there were some people in the backyard. So I strolled in and met some people who were talking about two of my favourite topics: dating and marketing – the staples of modern psychology if you ask me. I joined in and apparently they were doing a group sailing set for the same time Erin had mentioned…this must be my group . We chit-chatted for a bit and I mentioned the name of the gentleman I was here to sail with as well as my friend Erin. They nodded their heads but informed me that my captain was away on vacation, hmmm.. They assured me however that it must be a misunderstanding and that since Erin sent me there I could go on their boat provided I behaved (sure, no problem). Below: small rental sailboats for the club and Jericho Beach neighbourhoods.

Before leaving, I needed to eat. I found met two really fun bartenders who worked the club restaurant. Apparently, only club members can buy but luckily my new Yacht Club friends had a member amongst them who kindly extended me food-buying privileges. Good chicken fingers at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club by the way, I recommend it. I talked some more with the staff and learned a few things about the club: Memberships go for about $40,000 a year + a monthly membership fee (to cover costs) of about $1,500 dollars. These prices don’t include any gratuities, just the privilege of saying “Yeah, I hang out here.” I fished around for some coin in my back pocket but I must have left my millions at home, no membership today.
There are also a couple of House Rules that I was made aware of: 1. No cell phones in the Clubhouse. 2. No hanging jackets on the back of your chair please. They printed the first rule on a business card below:

Regardless, I was dressed for the occasion with a nice white button-up shirt and slick black pants… no jacket.
The 4 of us set sail to English Bay on a medium-sized boat, it was a perfect day with the late-afternoon sun and just enough wind. We had some good laughs and interesting conversation while I learned the ways of managing a sail boat. In conversation, I learned that my crew had mistaken my friend Erin to be their friend Aaron who is a guy (not a girl) from the club! It seemed that this was not the group I was supposed to meet up with at all. Now that’s name dropping at its best, I didn’t know I was doing it. Additionally, the trip ended up being free. It felt a bit odd to be there once we figured that out but alas…there we were! I just wanted to know where MY group went! I had one of the girls take a picture of me (below):
